I know that I’m probably the last person to hear about this, but thought I would share it with the rest of you guy, just in case you haven’t heard about it yet.

So what is Spotify, well it’s a Music player that works on the line of LastFm and imeem.  Except that it only plays the music that you choose.  That’s right you set up the play list that you want and it only plays that.  So no more listening to strange tracks that have no similarity with the original track that you chose.

I’ve been using for a day now and have found very few songs that it didn’t have.  The interface is very similar to iTunes, with you having a search section, search results section and what’s currently playing.  You can search by Song or Artist and you can sort the results the same way you would in iTunes.

So what is the catch I hear you asking.  Surely they are breaking copyright by letting you listen to exactly what you want to.  Well there is a catch, they have ads play from time to time.  Keep meaning to count how often the ad pops up, but keep losing track.  This may seem like a deal breaker, but I’ve found that the ads are not as disruptive as you would think that they would be.  They only seem to last about 20 seconds and are a lot less disruptive than a DJ.

There is however for the music purists out there a premium option, where you pay them £9.99 a month and have unlimited music without ads.  Me being the skin flint that I am however, will live with the ads.  There is another option if you are wanting to use it for a party.  You can buy a 24 hour premium pass for £1.  I think this is a really clever move from Spotify. As I don’t mind listening to ads for my normal listening but if I’m hosting a party I don’t really want them there, and £1 for the day isn’t bad.

There are some other funky features such as being able to share your play list online.  Nice if your going round to a mates house, and want them to have access to your play list.  There is also talk that they are busy with a iPhone app.  According to the website it will work over a 3G connection.  If it does it would be an awesome new development in listening to music.

Well that’s my 2 cents worth.  Check it out at spotify.com
