It’s time for another podcast, this time we’re talking about the new Gears of War 3. Me and Tamak are big Gears of War fans, after playing through the first two campaigns we were eager to see what this final game had install for us.
I’ve had Gears of War 3 for a couple of weeks now (since release day) and have been mostly playing through the campaign, I’ve tried a bit of the online Horde mode, but I want to finish the story first. Tamak visited me for the weekend and we set the evening aside for gaming. We played through some of the campaign co-op split screen, starting back from the beginning on Hardcore difficulty.
A couple of key things I noticed was firstly the graphics were a lot lower playing split screen, they’d simplified the environments, so there was no long grass blowing in the wind, just a patterned flat surface under your feet. The game even struggled a couple of times as the graphics jumped and stuttered. Note: I’ve ripped the game to the Xbox’s HardDrive so it’s not a reading error, it just couldn’t process all that was going on. For the majority though it was fine and still felt very playable.
The other thing was the difficulty setting, I’d noticed this when playing the campaign solo too. So there’s a choice of Casual, Normal, Hardcore or Insane. Normally I’d go straight for the hardest setting, except insane is not selectable, turns out you can only play it on insane once you’ve already completed it once. Sorry to burst your bubble Epic, but I’m only gonna play this story once!? So the only option is to take on Hardcore, and well… it’s flipping easy! Seems the Casual mode is for people who’ve never played a first-person shooter before, it even has aiming assist, playing the game on normal will disable the assisted aiming, but if you’ve ever played any Gears of War game before you’re going to want to play it on hardcore. It’s such a shame we can’t get our hands on the insane mode straight away and actually enjoy a challenging campaign…
Overall I’m really pleased with this game, it’s a great story with some amazing graphics and action along the way, plus the multi-player isn’t too bad either. Tell us what you think in the comments or on the members chat.
